Awards

These are some of the awards I have won during my career.

Fluke Contest

Fluke Instruments held a world wide design contest who could come up with the best use of their ScopeMeter. I took first place out of 16,000 entries having designed a circuit board to measure the response of a liquid pouring nozzle.

First, I used the ScopeMeter to look at and record pressure curves of the nozzle in operation. From those curves I used my mechanical engineering knowledge to interpret what was happening at each stage of the pressure curve. This gave me insight into what was happening inside the nozzle.

Next, I created know defects in the nozzles and looked at the curves. This proved my knowledge and gave me great feedback.

Lastly, I think built an embedded circuit that measured the width of the curve to kick out defective products on the production line.

Industrial Arts Award

Every since I can remember, I always enjoyed designing things mechanical and electrical. In high school, I knew I wanted to go to college so I was taking college classes: calculus, chemistry, physics, but I also wanted to learn how to build things. So, I took DOUBLE overloads of classes, which meant no lunch (ate packed lunch between periods) nor study hall. This allowed me to take two more classes all year round. The classes I took were electronics, machine shop, and automotive classes. The school recognized me by awarding me the industrial arts department award for graduation.

Engineering License

I took the extra step of getting my Engineering License from the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation and the National Society of Professional Engineers. When I took the exam, it was a general exam for all engineering disciplines and it covered:

Mathematics & statistics
- calculus, analytical geometry, vector analysis, statistics, probability

Engineering ethics & professional pratice
- code of ethics, liability, licensure

Engineering economics
- time value of money, cost analysis, break-even analysis

Statics & mechanics of materials
- force systems, equilibrium, stresses

Mechanical engineering
- fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, machine design, kinematics

Electrical & computer
- circuits, power systems, signal processing, electronics, electromagnetics

Other
- engineering science, materials science, properties of materials
